Les Gets is a combination of a friendly, bustling traditional village, with wide, sunny slopes directly in the heart of the village.
It is a village to which people return again and again.
Being so close to the Swiss border, the architecture is mainly pretty wooden chalets rather than futuristic high rise blocks.
Snow Record - Les Gets is in the 'Portes du Soleil' - 'Doors of Sun'.
In winter Les Gets is both sunny and has a good snow record. It is in the snow shadow of Mont Blanc and has a good snowfall. The pistes are grassy mountain pastures in summer and so hold the snow well. There are no rocky outcrops to be covered and so only a little depth of snow is required for pistes to be skiable. Also the airflow after a snowfall tends to be from the north keeping the powder in good condition. Many of the lower runs are protected by pine woods and give shelter and good visibility even when it is snowing. Snow canons cover the main pistes. The pictures above and from the Gibannaz Apartments were taken on April 22nd 2001!!
Update - 11 April 2008 - fabulous conditions - pistes well covered in snow, all runs complete after 3 weeeks of alternating new powder and sun, and more snow is forecast.
Late April 2008 - lifts now shut but so much snow that the diggers were called in to move approx 2 m of snow from the road across the piste!!
As Les Gets is not overshadowed by any large mountains, it is not cast into shadow for large parts of the day and has a sushine record well above average. We have had full sun on all our holidays in January and February as well as March and April.
Update - 2008 - February and early March was particuarly sunny - powder arrived 15/3/08 and is still continuing intermingled with lovely sunny days.
There is a good selection of ski and snowboard schools, shops, restaurants and bars, along with a disco, bowling, cinema and, in the winter, an open air skating rink .
